Progressive House

Today we take an in depth look into one of the original sub genres of electro, progressive house music.  Widely known as prog house, this genre is mostly heard in clubs by resident DJ's.  The components of prog house, as well as any progressive music, are long builds that lead to repeating drops and steady bass.  Pretty much what this means is that the song builds for ever, but instead of having a banger drop, it will usually just go back into the melody but add more harmonies.  Some of you might be confused, seeing as this sounds A LOT like trance.  But the difference is that it still is house music.  You can still rave to it, instead of getting bored with it like trance.

Producers specializing in prog house are also some of the biggest names in the scene, and you have probably heard a few of their songs maybe without realizing that it had it's own genre and culture.  Producers include Fedde Le Grande, Michael Woods, some Deadmau5 and occasionally Afrojack, but the true embodiment of progressive house has to be Avicii.

And here are some tracks to add prog to your library.

It's time for the second installation of the rewind posts.  For those of you that are new to the site, the Rewind posts are basically full of throwback tracks.  Nothing new, just some old insane electro.  The point of these posts, besides to give you pure gold to add to your library, is to take a step back from the hype.  Instead of hunting for the newest tracks, appreciate the old.

Pure. Gold.

Little Secrets (LAZRtag Remix) - Passion Pit

So Dynamite (Breakdown Remix) - Oh Snap! & Jen Lasher

Difficult for Weirdos (Crookers Remix) - Robbie Williams

Spotlight: Boys Noize & Boys Noize Records

Today the focus is on everything Boys Noize.  Alexander Ridha, the man behind the music, hails from Germany and is huge in the electro scene.  Not only is he an incredible producer, but he also heads his own record label, Boys Noize Records (BNR).  His tracks are massive, and are famous for their long builds and heavy percussion, but still can be classified as melodious and not just pure banger.  They are both perfect ipod music as well as club hits.

The label, created in 2005, has released almost all of Boys Noize's own tracks, but also other big names in electro.  Recently released artists such as Bart B More, Harvard Bass, BeataCue, Ryenecologist, Erol Alkan and Hey Today! have had huge success on the label.

Ridha himself is not only an unreal producer, but has widespread fame for his live skills as well.  He has utter control over the crowd.  True performer and entertainer, not just pressing play like a bunch of DJs now.

Relaxing Electro

We all love to go nuts at a party or club, raving to absolute bangers and such.  But sometimes, you just need a break.  Sometimes, you can't jump.  Or rave.  Or dance.  You just need to sit down, sip your drink, and tap your foot.  I have the perfect solution.  These tracks below are the perfect mesh between electronic hard melodies and relaxing soft baselines.

So kick back. Put your feet up. Grab a glass, two ice cubes, and a bottle of jack.  Get comfy and press play.

Download all.

Pop Remixes: Version Two

So, if you've been with this blog from the beginning or just have looked at some of our first posts, you might remember a while back we did a Pop Remixes post.  And I had said something about making this a reoccurring element on this blog.  BUT, I have slacked on that.  In fact the first post was so long ago that we didn't even do images back then.  So here is the long overdue Pop Remixes Volume Two.  This is just a post of songs that are in popular music (not necessarily rap or pop or rock, but just not electro) remixed into electronic tracks.

Check.

The Original Pop Remixes Post CLICK HERE

VOLUME TWO

Memories (Leo Lotsaless Remix Big Room Build) - David Guetta ft. Kid Cudi (I know it's electro but it's poppy enough to earn a spot)

Schiebe (Remix Adapted from "Born This Way") - Lady GaGa --> So this last track needs explaining.  Basically, as we all know, Lady GaGa can be a bit eccentric. And this song is no exception.  At her recent fashion show, she unveiled this song, a German housey adaptation of her new single "Born This Way"

Mini Dual Spotlight: AC Slater & Jack Beats

Instead of giving a massive spotlight on one artist, I thought today I’d give a little bit of both today.  Both of these artists have very individual styles, especially in their remixes, and their sound is  unmistakable whatsoever.

AC Slater, hailing from Brooklyn, is an up and coming DJ/Producer that sounds like no one else.  His music is what some have called "pulsating progressive house," and this is a perfect fit.  His music builds like a proghouse song, but yet has the isolated, pulsey note sound of dutch house.  Absolutely unreal.

Jack Beats, a DJ duo formed by Plus One and Beni G, are a production group with a very rare sound right now.  The best label for it is fidget house.  What this really means is that it's dubstep for house fans.  It's the perfect medium.  Make sure to grab these tracks and keep an eye out.

Something a Little Different: Fritz Arnaude

So, I'm introducing a different kind of track than you would usually find on this blog, an ill track done by  Fritz Arnaude and Skizzy Mars. The track, "Possibilities," is the dopest song I've heard in the seemingly exhausted Hip Hop/Electro/Mashup genre in a long ass time. Fritz shows exceptional attention to detail in his composition and production and it results in seamless execution and downright incredible sound, not to mention all of the verses are INSANE and the song flows perfectly while still being original and not redundant. This is a MUST download, definitely the best song I have heard in a while outside of the purely electronic genre, not to mention the fact that the guy is pretty chill. Have a listen and see for yourself, this is going to be big.

Possibilities (Featuring Skizzy Mars)- Fritz Arnaude

Enjoy.

Upcoming Webster Hall

One of the original mainstream nightclubs in NYC, Webster Hall continues to dish out amazing concert after amazing concert, and the upcoming schedule is no different.  In February alone, names such as Porter Robinson, Skrillex, Sebastian Ingrosso, Nero, Tiesto (fuck trance), Joachim Garraud, and FareOh.  Seeing as we are already at the 9th of February, this is a packed month.  I would definitely do my best to go at least to one of these upcoming acts.
Here are the dates and a track to go along with each.

Looking Back/Looking Forward: Deadmau5

Recently, Canadian DJ, Deadmau5, (Joel Zimmerman) has announced that he will be releasing another new album some time in 2011. This news comes just two months after the release of his 3rd studio album, 4x4=12. So, you have the new album to look forward to, but there is some bad news. Zimmerman has also said that he won't be releasing any singles between now and the time his new album drops. I guess were all just going to have to wait a little bit to hear some new Mau5.

I have decided that even though the album came out two months ago, and I'm sure most have you guys have heard it all at this point, I'm going to post all the songs with my personal ratings and comments. Overall, I don't personally like 4x4=12 as much as his previous 2 albums, but I do still like it, especially his experimentation with dubstep in a few of the tracks. I give the album an overall 4 stars...here are all of the tracks.

Some Chords - Deadmau5 - 5 stars - probably my favorite song on the album, all 7 minutes are insane

Sofi Needs a Ladder - Deadmau5 - 4 stars - good vocals, insane bass

City in Florida - Deadmau5 - 4 stars - sick bass, plays around with some dubstep

Bad Selection - Deadmau5 - 3 stars - kind of boring, nothing special

Animal Rights - Deadmaus & Wolfgang Gartner - 4 stars - love gartner, two djs styles work very well together

I Said (Michael Woods Remix) - Deadmau5 & Chris Lake - 4 stars - classic deadmau5 sound with some great woods stuff thrown in

Cthulhu Sleeps - Deadmau5 - 4 stars - very long into, captivating rhythm

Right This Second - Deadmau5 - 5 stars - want to see this track played live SO bad, reminds me of old deadmau5, ridiculous bass

Raise Your Weapon - Deadmau5 - 4 stars - dubstep, chilling vocals

One Trick Pony - Deadmau5 - 3 stars - dubstep, boring vocals

Everything Before - Deadmau5 - 2 stars - probably the worst song on the album, boring

cheers,
-Holden

Spotlight: Toxic Avenger

Many of today's DJ's perform wearing masks, like Mustard Pimp, Daft Punk, The Bloody Beetroots, Cyber Punkers, and many others.  Among them is the french producer The Toxic Avenger.  Known simply as Toxic, the DJ performs both masked and unmasked, blurring the lines, unlike many other producers.  Toxic, while known for his trademark fast, pitchy melodies, has also become famous for his videos.  They are more short films than music videos, and consistently amazing.
Toxic manages to gain mainstream level publicity, being remixed by huge names like the Beetroots, while staying true to the fundamentals of electro.  He doesn't play huge arenas, instead he packs small clubs.  He doesn't DJ on stage, but rather on level with the crowd.  Toxic is about the music, not the hype.

Enough talking.  Download the tracks.

Toxic is Dead - The Toxic Avenger

Toxic is Dead (Designer Drugs Remix) - The Toxic Avenger

Toxic is Dead (Owl Vision Remix) - The Toxic Avenger

Old School Toxic - The Toxic Avenger

Bad Girls Need Love Too - The Toxic Avenger

Superheroes - The Toxic Avenger

Escape (The Bloody Beetroots Remix) - The Toxic Avenger

And here is an example of those videos I was talking about..

Fuck Authority

This afternoon, instead of spending my time in a useful fashion, I was forcibly put in detention. While sitting here, not permitted to do anything but my homework, I decided I would start a new post. I began to think of what music I'd want to be listening to in detention. And these thoughts began to mesh with my current hatred of all authority figures. What do you get? We'll, I give you electro punk.

Probably made most famous by the Bloody Beetroots, electro punk is a subgenre of electro that takes all of the core ideals of punk (anti-rhythmic rhythms, harsh lyrics, and insane decibel levels) and meshes that with electronic synths and beats. The bloody Beetroots have achieved the epitome of this with their newest project, The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew '77, which removes Bob Rifo from behind the DJ tables and gives him a microphone.

Overall, electro punk is a very pertinent new form of electro and I highly recommend trying it out.

Check out these tracks from SLUTTT, Cyberpunkers, and Designer Drugs, all electro punk.

I Made This Song For Dim Mak Tuesdays in LA - SLUTTT

All Congo - All Leather

Warp 1977 - The Bloody Beetroots

Ill to Destroy - The Bloody Beetroots

Fly By Night (Cyberpunkers Remix) - Cerebral Vortex

Fuck the System (Designer Drugs Remix) - Cyberpunkers

Drop Down - Designer Drugs

Love Get Out of My Way (Designer Drugs Remix) - Monarchy

And if any of you were wondering, this is what a punk rave would look like.  Fast forward to 1:16 if you wanna see only Beetroots

Supplement to Bassnectar Post

So Anubis just added his ill getting started Bassnectar post, and I realized that I had the perfect follow up track for it.

We've discussed female vocalists in electronic music on this blog quite a bit, and a recurring name is Ellie Goulding.  Her song lights is huge, but not very hardcore at all. And Bassnectar is completely hardcore. What happens when you put the two together? You get a hybrid of easy going vocals and classic dubstep wobble.  It's kind of difficult to explain, but picture sitting on the bus, and the girl of your dreams sits next to you.  She is a classic indie loving girl, nothing hardcore, all easy going, and she asks to share your headphones. Well if this song is playing, she is sure to be pleased.
